Real Madrid confirm extent of Vinicius Junior injury

Real Madrid have confirmed that Vinicius Junior suffered a “tear in the femoral biceps” in his left left during Brazil’s defeat to Colombia.

The star forward had got off to a flying start in Brazil’s FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier against Colombia at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendez on Thursday, setting up Gabriel Martinelli’s opening goal of the game. However, 20 minutes later, Vinicius hobbled off the field with a suspected thigh injury.

Following his substitution, Brazil would notably fall apart – going on to lose the game thanks to a second-half brace from Luis Diaz.

Speaking immediately after the game, Vini admitted that the injury was likely the same thigh ailment which kept him out for a month at the start of the 2023/24 campaign, stating: “I think it’s the same injury as the last time. I took a hit there and it hurt a little after. [On Friday] we will do tests to see how I go.”

Out of action again

Said tests, however, have confirmed that the injury is in fact much more severe than the one the forward suffered in late August. A statement regarding the Brazilian’s fitness on Real Madrid’s official website reads:

“After the tests carried out today [Saturday, November 18] on our player Vinicius Jr by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a tear in the femoral biceps with involvement of the distal tendon in his left leg.”

The injury is expected to keep Vini out of action until the new year. This news will come as a bitter blow to Madrid, especially after it was revealed that midfielder Eduardo Camvinga is also set to miss the rest of 2023 with a knee injury suffered on international duty.
