“I don’t even know if it’s something that can really be learned, because now that I’m playing in Spain, I can speak from experience: their way of keeping the ball is different.
“It’s very different from everything I’ve experienced playing in England.
“So I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to reach that level. But we can clearly improve, or go in the other direction and really play to our strengths: being physical, playing direct and on the counter-attack.
“We can choose one approach or the other. And there’s no single perfect way to win a football match.
“We can’t keep looking at other countries and trying to be like them, because we’re not them: we are English.
“We have our own qualities that they don’t have. So maybe we just need to start playing to what we know how to do best.”
